In-Person Smog Repair Events

If you live in the San Joaquin Valley and think your vehicle needs smog-related repairs, bring it to a Tune In & Tune Up event for a free emissions test.If your car fails the on-site test, you will receive a $500 voucher for emissions-related diagnostics, testing, repair, and certification at a participating STAR test-and-repair shop. All data collected is used for internal reporting only.

Tune In & Tune Up is open to San Joaquin Valley residents. Events take place across San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, and the valley portion of Kern County. You may attend any event within the Valley.

What to Bring

• Your name, address, and phone number
• Your vehicle’s VIN
• The vehicle itself (must be present at the event)

Bringing your driver’s license and vehicle registration will help speed up check-in.

What Happens at the Event

1. Receive a free emissions test on site.
2. If the vehicle fails, staff will issue a $500 repair voucher valid for program-approved emissions repairs at a participating STAR shop.
3. Staff can help you schedule an appointment before you leave.

Event-Day Tips

• Arrive early. Gates typically open around 6:30 a.m. Testing begins around 7:50 a.m. Events are first-come, first-served, and lines can be long. Expect at least a 2-hour wait. Gates close by 11:50 a.m.
• No diesel vehicles. Light- or medium-duty gasoline vehicles only (under 14,000 lbs).
• Towing is okay if needed for Planned Non-Operation (PNO) or expired tags, but the car must start and run to be tested.

Traffic and Safety

• Stay inside your vehicle unless instructed otherwise.
• Bring water and snacks. Restrooms are available at all venues.

• Bilingual staff are available at all events.
• If you need a disability accommodation, notify a staff member at check-in.
